American Beauty is a controversial film released by Sam Mendes in 1999. Whatever one thinks, this piece of art nevertheless has its own pros and cons.
There are undoubtedly a lot of advantages of this film. First of all, it conquers a lot of viewer’s hearts for being very original. It is its originality that made American beauty a winner of 5 Oscars. Secondly, the cast is proficient and the acting is really brilliant, as characters are lifelike and dramatic. Thirdly, the plot of the film is well thought-out, as it is quite absorbing and memorable. Then, the message of the film is very deep and philosophical, although not everybody can understand it. Finally, a large number of people adore the soundtrack from this film.
Being a controversial film, American Beauty has a number of disadvantages. The first point is that the film is a bit depressing and even shocking. The second point is that its pace can be a bit slow at times, therefore the film sometimes becomes boring. Moreover, it’s unpredictably sad ending leaves one with no positive emotions. In addition, a howler of this film is that it cannot be watched by the whole family, as it includes drug and sexual content, explicit language and violence.
